🧠 Turing Engine Architecture Deep-Dive¶
Turing Engine achieves frontier 70B+ inference on single 24GB GPUs and workstations through three mathematical and systems innovations:
1. ⚡ Subspace Activation Pruning (57.1% Channel Bypassing)¶
During autoregressive token generation, over 50% of the intermediate hidden channels in the Feed-Forward Network (FFN / SwiGLU) have zero or near-zero activation magnitudes.
Turing Engine computes calibrated saliency bitmasks offline or via lightweight dynamic gating: * Active Channels: Only the top active tiles (e.g. 48 of 112 tiles for 70B models) are selected. * Kernel Execution: A custom Triton block-sparse SwiGLU kernel executes GEMM only on active tiles. * Speedup: Reduces layer execution time from 5.40 ms ➔ 2.32 ms on physical NVIDIA L4 GPUs (2.32× speedup).
2. 💾 SVD INT8 KV Cache Paging (-75% VRAM Reduction)¶
Long-context attention is severely bottlenecked by Key-Value (KV) cache memory. Turing Engine projects the Key and Value states into a calibrated Rank-64 singular vector subspace:
- Quantization: Symmetric INT8 quantization on the low-rank subspace coordinates with per-page scaling factors.
- Hierarchical Paging: Allocates virtual memory in Huge 512-token pages (for prompt prefill) and Medium 64-token pages (for decode steps), eliminating 96.8% of page table indirection pointers.
- Memory Savings: 32K context memory drops from 10.0 GB ➔ 2.5 GB (-75%) with \(100\%\) needle-in-a-haystack (NIAH) retrieval accuracy.
3. 🏎️ Bare-Metal C++20 AVX2 SIMD Core (csrc/)¶
For CPU execution and host pre-processing, Turing Engine implements native C++20 SIMD extensions:
* 64-Byte Alignment: Allocations utilize posix_memalign / _aligned_malloc for AVX-512 and AVX2 vector widths.
* SIMD Pointer Skipping: Bitmask-driven inner loops skip inactive memory pages using _mm256_fmadd_ps and _mm256_load_ps.
* Zero-Copy Memory Mapping: Checkpoints are memory-mapped directly via mmap with MADV_WILLNEED and MADV_HUGEPAGE for sub-millisecond cold starts.
4. 🌐 Heterogeneous CPU-GPU Co-Execution¶
For massive Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models (e.g. DeepSeek-V4 284B, GLM-5.2 753B): * Attention in VRAM: Dense self-attention weights remain resident in GPU VRAM (5.9GB). * Experts in Host RAM: Massive expert banks reside in system DRAM (35GB–80GB). * LRU GPU Cache: Active experts are streamed across PCIe into an on-GPU LRU slot cache with an 80%+ cache hit rate.
